At ICS, we believe that all students can achieve at high levels. Therefore, we have a Response to Intervention (RTI) program in place. Our RTI includes classroom strategies delivered by teachers and counselling support provided by our school counsellors.
In cases where teachers and the principal or deputy principal believe that a student is falling behind or not achieving at expected levels, it is at the discretion of the administration to conduct a Supporting Student Success (SSS) meeting. During this meeting, the student's teachers, counsellor, and principal or deputy principal collaborate to review strategies that have been effective in supporting the student's learning. The goal is to devise a comprehensive plan that enables the student to succeed in all classes, with the support of teachers, the counselor, and the school leadership.
Every Wednesday morning from 8:00 to 9:00am, students may receive extra help in designated academic support rooms, supervisied by subject-specific educational assistants. Support is available in the following subjects : Math, Science, Art, Learning Support / EAL and independanty study.
By prior arrangement, all faculty are available to help students during the regular school hours for review and explanation of work not mastered. Professional tutoring for a fee in out-of-school hours may be arranged privately by parents. The school does not maintain a list of academic tutors. Tutoring by other school employees requires permission of the principal.
The core focus of ICS'S Learning Support practice is to ensure that appropriate mechanisms and stratergies are in place to ensure that all students have equal access to the curriculum. Undiagnosed or undisclosed learning challenges can cause students to struggle unnecessarily and lose confidence in their academic abilities.
Depending on the student’s needs, learning accommodations on formal assessments will be evaluated and therefore will be granted. However, these accommodations can only be granted based on a report from an Educational Psychologist.
After a thorough review of school records and parent-provided information, ICS will admit a student if the required services can be provided. If a current student appears to acquire learning support, student support services will be consulted. They will meet with the student and their family to determine whether formal testing is advisable, leading toward the development and implementation of an individualized educational learning plan.
