Framed by the ICS Way: Take care of yourself. Take care of others. Take care of this place.
As part of our commitment to creating a culture of learning and respect at ICS Middle School, we are introducing a new daily routine: all students are expected to arrive to each class “Learning Ready.” This simple but powerful expectation helps every learner begin with purpose and clarity and supports a consistent, focused environment across our school.
Each student starts class with the BIG 5 on their desk (or readily available):
✅ Laptop (closed and charged) WITH charger available
✅ Agenda
✅ Water bottle
✅ Subject-specific materials (notebook, reading book, PHE kit, calculator, etc.)
✅ Pencil case with basic supplies
Additionally, students should:
Arrive on time and prepared to engage
Be ready to listen, contribute, and reflect
Engage in the classroom’s opening routines and learning activator
Take Care of Yourself
Being prepared with the right tools and mindset allows students to begin each class calmly and confidently. It reduces anxiety and sets the tone for success.
Take Care of Others
When every student is learning ready, the class can begin smoothly and efficiently. This shows respect for classmates and teachers and supports everyone’s right to learn.
Take Care of This Place
Having consistent routines and treating materials and shared spaces with care builds a responsible and supportive learning environment. Students are expected to return spaces to the condition they found them.
How Parents Can Support
Review the BIG 5 checklist with your child at home.
Help them pack their bag each night with required materials.
Encourage responsibility for charging devices and managing their supplies.
Talk about how being prepared helps them feel more confident and focused.
This is one step in our broader work to build a culture of high expectations, care, and consistency at ICS Middle School. Through the ICS Way, we are ensuring that every student is equipped—not only with supplies—but also with the mindset to make the most of each learning opportunity.
If you have questions or would like strategies to support your child’s readiness at home, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s advisor or grade level leader.
