Grade level retention of a student, like acceleration, is not taken lightly or done quickly. As with the acceleration, a team of teachers, administrator(s), and parents will engage in a comprehensive discussion and review of all the data associated with a student before making any final decisions. Additional assessments and a retention scale survey will be given in all recommended cases. Initial discussions for possible retention students will occur at the beginning of the third quarter.
Retention is best undertaken in the early years. It is only effective when all parties agree that the student will benefit from additional time in the same grade level. It is most effective when focusing on students who may have a child development delay or who may be among the youngest in their class.
Retention recommendations and input will be taken from all parties involved in the education of the child. The final decision will be a collaborative decision between the parents and the Elementary Principal.
