Students develop STEM skills and cross-cutting competencies that support workforce readiness

Narrative

Our school counselors provide whole classroom guidance to all of our students. They have students complete career interest inventories and create vision boards. We follow their guidance lessons with a field trip to Auburn University for kids to explore different colleges such as the College of Nursing, Kinesiology, Engineering, Band, Athletics, Human Sciences, and Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. They also visit the Raptor Center where staff provide an educational experience to students about rehabilitation for wild raptors and birds of prey.

We begin the school day with a simple greeting and handshake. Our teachers greet students at their doors, and teachers work with kids on standards for them to compete in The Amazing Shake competition our faculty embraced from training at The Ron Clark Academy's professional development for educators. The Amazing Shake is a friendly week-long competition that places an emphasis on students' manners, social nuances, discipline, respect, and social conduct. Before the competition, students are taught skills such as how to give a proper handshake, work a room, give a successful interview, and how to remain composed under pressure. Our goal is to prepare students to present themselves exceptionally well for opportunities today as well as those that will come in the future.

Standard 14, Concept 1: School/program has identified discipline-specific skills and cross-cutting competencies i.e., 21st Century skills, soft skills) and aligned sources of student performance data for each of these areas
