School provides within-school and extra-curricular opportunities for students to extend STEM learning
Florence B. Mathis Elementary School provides a variety of STEAM-specific extracurricular and extended day opportunities for all learners. Our faculty sponsors a variety of clubs that meet after school or before school to allow students freedom of choice in their club activities. Our clubs are based on student interest, so they vary year-to-year. We offer robotics, dance, art, step, recycling, Beyblades, kindness, 4H, gardening, international connections (ICon), bicycle, and Peer Helpers clubs. We open sign-ups to all students interested and encourage their participation.
Partnerships with our community is strong network. Throughout the year, students have opportunities to engage with STEM practitioners, community experts, and other STEM partners. Our 4H expert delivers lessons to every classroom. At the beginning of our school year, we welcome our community partners to our annual Partners in Education Breakfast. This breakfast is our way of saying "Thank you" for their involvement in our school. Our partners participate in many activities throughout the school year such as Egg Drop, Watch DOGS events, The Amazing Shake, and Career Day.
In addition to our partners participating in our school events, we also provide additional opportunities for our students to engage with STEAM experts. This school year, our students were invited to attend the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival Youth Showcase to watch students perform in a professional setting and learn more about songwriting.
