Discussion cards
Storyboarding
Ask pupils to name films that have been adapted from books.
• Discuss which version is “better”.
• Explain that you are going to read the opening chapter of The Candle Man with the intention of turning it into a film.
• Read the chapter.
• Discuss and record the main events of the chapter.
• Discuss and record what you learn about setting and character in the first chapter.
• Using the PowerPoint introduce the task.
• Determine the success criteria for an effective storyboard as a whole class.
• Split pupils into groups. The chapter might best be broken into three sections; each section can be prepared by more than one group.
Pupils in their groups (no more than three or four) create a storyboard for a section of
Chapter 1 of The Candle Man.
• Give pupils the remainder of the lesson and the following lesson to create the storyboard.
• The third lesson is spent presenting the storyboards, discussing which are most effective and why, and assessing each group’s work in line with the class success criteria.
