Description
Knowledge and skills needed from year 6
October - December
Particles, solids, liquids and gases, elements and compounds
Substances can be solid, liquid or gas and simple changes of state e.g. melting, boiling
October - December
Classification, food chains, density, forces, light
Simple ideas about putting things into groups. Describing what different types of animals eat. Understand that pushes and pulls are forces.
October - December
Waves, energy, magnetism
Simple understanding of water waves and then the use of the terms "light waves" and "sound waves" (no explanation needed). Understand that substances can be magnetic or non-magnetic. Use terms "repel" and "attract".
January - February
Forces, acids and alkalis, energy, photosynthesis, separating mixtures, human health
Basics of photosynthesis. Can identify some threats to human health e.g. a cold is caused by a virus. Know some simple treatments for disease, basic first aid, good hygiene. Know that some changes are reversible e.g. dissolving.
March - April
Elements, compounds & mixtures, particle diagrams, chemical formulae, changing state, Greenhouse effect & global warming, classification, food webs, pyramids of number & biomass, oil & plastics
Some ideas about climate change. Simple ideas about classifying things into groups. Basic ideas about food chains.
