Lesson 6

Friction & streamlining

You should already know that pushes and pulls are forces. The forces on an object can be balanced or unbalanced.

Objectives:

  1. Know the effect of balanced forces on an object.

  2. Know the effect of unbalanced forces on an object.

PART A

Copy the following paragraph.

When one surface moves over another, there will be a force called friction. Friction is a force which always acts in the opposite direction to the movement. Friction between an object and the air is called air resistance or drag.

PART B

Watch this video about friction.

PART C

Look at the information in this diagram:

PART D

Copy this results table.

Streamlining experiment results

PART E

Watch this video and measure the time for the objects to fall. You can use a clock, watch or phone to time or you could use the timer at the bottom of the video. Record the results of the experiment in your table. (You will need to work out the mean - if you have forgotten how to do this look at lesson 4 on the website).

PART F

Try this quiz.

Well done if you got 5/5 on the quiz, if you didn't go back through the lesson again.
