Lesson 4

Fuels & renewable energy

This topic is about energy sources. There are renewable energy sources (like solar) and non-renewable energy sources like most fuels.

Objectives:

  1. Know the meaning of fuel.

  2. Observe and record the results of an experiment.

  3. Know the names of renewable sources of energy.

PART A

Copy this paragraph about fuels.

Fuels are chemicals that can be burned to give heat energy. This type of reaction is called combustion. Many fuels such as gas and petrol are non-renewable, this means they are running out and another problem is that when they burn they produce carbon dioxide which is a major cause of global warming. It is important for humans to find renewable forms of energy that do not harm the environment.

PART B

Watch this video about fuels.

PART C

Watch this video about an experiment to test which fuel is the best.

PART D

Copy this results table for the experiment.

PART E

Open the following spreadsheet (click the box in the top right corner). Then fill in the results from the experiment into the yellow boxes and the spreadsheet will draw the graph for you. When you have finished, delete the numbers in the yellow boxes.
