Reception Class – Autumn Term Learning
This half term, our Reception learners have enjoyed exploring the topic “This is Me.” They began by creating self-portraits and sharing stories about their summer adventures, helping them settle into their new learning environment. The children explored emotions and feelings, drew pictures of their families, and investigated their homes by counting windows and doors. Using construction blocks, they designed and built their own houses and shared special family traditions. As part of our cultural learning, we celebrated the Festival of Lights (Diwali), discovering how it is observed around the world. The children created clay diya lamps and expressed their creativity through colourful rangoli patterns.
Our Reception learners have been immersed in the topic “Right or Wrong, Let’s Get Along,” exploring traditional tales like Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks to learn about empathy and making good choices. From baking cakes for Grandma to voting on porridge toppings, the children brought stories to life while building their addition, subtraction, and sharing skills in Mathematics. Our MAGIC experiences were central to our learning, as the children practiced resolving conflicts through collaboration and a growth mindset. As the festive season approached, the classroom buzzed with excitement while we wrote letters to Santa, learned Welsh phrases for “Nadolig Llawen,” and practiced our Christmas carols. It has been a wonderful term watching the children grow in independence and teamwork during our concert rehearsals!
Our Reception learners have had a busy start to the spring term, exploring the world of traditional tales and nature. We began by investigating the properties of materials through the story of The Three Little Pigs, where the children used their growth mindset to design and build their own strong houses. In Mathematics, we have been developing our counting and subtraction skills, which we applied during our exciting Bird Watch Week. A highlight of the term was our local walk to the canal to bird watch; the children identified local birds and collected data, which inspired them to design and build their own birdhouses and feeders. The children also demonstrated wonderful collaboration by working together to build bridges for The Three Billy Goats Gruff and practiced their independence through expressive storytelling. Finally, as we prepared for the Eisteddfod, the children combined their technology and creative skills by photographing local wildlife and learning Welsh poetry.
