My name is Mr Johnson and I am super excited to be teaching Year 5 this year. Alongside myself will be Miss Horrell. We have lots of exciting topics this year, which we think the children are going to love!
A few reminders:
Swimming is on a Monday,
Forest School is on a Tuesday

What's The Matter?
This term in Year 5, we have been learning all about states of matter in science & technology sessions. Stay tuned for details of a trip to Techniquest in Cardiff Bay soon!
We will also be working on a special project celebrating 'Cwmbran@75', where children will be visiting places in their home town, which they never knew existed. The children will learn so much about their local cultural heritage and share why they are proud to be from Cwmbran.
Cynefin
During spring term 1, we learned all about Cynefin, and what it meant to us as individuals. It allowed us to explore the rich history and culture of Wales, whilst also looking at the impact Wales, and Welsh coal, had on the wider world during the industrial revolution.
Year 5 had an exciting day exploring the wonderful history of Big Pit Mining Museum. During their visit to the Museum in Blaenavon, the students enjoyed going underground and experiencing life in the mines, talking to real miners and learning about the ways in which Welsh coal impacted the industrial revolution around the world. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring their learning to life and deepen their understanding of this fascinating period, whilst also embracing the welsh culture. The day was full of fun, learning, and memorable experiences!
Animal Kingdom
During spring term 2, Year 5 have been learning about the animal kingdom. We have been focusing on primates, learning about their behaviours, social structures, and intelligence. It’s been fascinating to see how closely related they are to humans and how complex their lives can be in the wild.. Year 5 were fortunate enough to visit Noah's Ark Zoo farm, in Bristol, to get a closer look into the ways in which animals are treated in captivity.
As part of our learning, we’ve also been debating the topic of animal captivity—whether it’s right to keep animals, especially intelligent ones like primates, in zoos or other enclosures. This has sparked thoughtful discussions about animal welfare, conservation, and the role of humans in protecting or harming wildlife. Our learning allowed us to plan and design suitable enclosures for the different primates using Minecraft.
