Roedd galw mawr am lo ar gyfer tanwydd i’r diwydiannau copr, gweithfeydd haearn a rheilffyrdd. Defnyddiwyd glo hefyd i gynhesu adeiladau ac i goginio bwyd. Roedd De Cymru yn enwog yn fyd eang am ei byllau glo. Yn y Bari roedd y porthladd allforio glo mwyaf yn y byd. Caerdydd oedd yr ail gan fod glo yn cael ei gludo yno ar y rheilffordd.
Ar ôl y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf, roedd llai o ofyn am lo wrth i ddiwydiannau ddefnyddio olew a phrynu glo’n rhatach dramor. Dioddefodd y pyllau glo, collodd 140,000 o ddynion eu gwaith wrth i 241 o byllau glo orfod cau.
Coal was an important commodity to fuel the copper, ironworks and railway industries. Another important purpose of coal was to heat buildings as well as to cook food. South Wales became famous globally for its coal mines. Barry was the largest coal exporting port in the world and Cardiff was the second largest as coal was transported there by rail. After the First World War, there was less demand for coal due to industries using oil. Cheaper coal was also imported. The Welsh coal mines suffered. By 1936, 140,000 men had lost their jobs as 241 mines were closed because they were not making enough money.

Plant yn y pyllau glo/ Children in the mines
Amser maith yn ôl, roedd hi’n dderbyniol i blant weithio yn y pyllau glo. Nid oedd hyn yn iach iawn gan eu bod yn gweithio mewn tywyllwch am 12 awr heb awyr iach. Golygai hyn hefyd nad oeddynt yn gallu mynd i’r ysgol. Yn 1843 roedd y llywodraeth wedi stopio plant weithio yn y pyllau glo ac roedd rhaid iddynt fynd i’r ysgol.
A long time ago, it was acceptable for children to be sent down the mines to work. They worked for 12 hours a day in the dark with no fresh air. It also meant that they had no education as they could not go to school. In 1843, a law was passed banning women and children (under the age of 10) from working in coal mines.
