Choose one of the tasks below to complete. You can halve numbers to 10, 20 or complete halving diamonds.

Heart weaving - Santes Dwynwen

Step 1: Choose the pattern of basket you want to make and download the pattern. Print the pattern or create one yourself using a ruler. Another option is to print a black & white pattern and colour it with crayons or markers.

Step 2: Cut out the long, oval-shaped pattern pieces. Each basket requires two pattern pieces: one red (or pink) and one white.

Step 3: Fold each pattern piece in half end-to-end. Be sure that the three central lines are on the outside.

Step 4: Hold the folded pattern piece firmly and cut on each of the three lines. Repeat for each pattern piece. If you printed on coloured paper, refold the pattern piece the opposite way so that the printed lines are on the inside.

Step 5: Hold the folded red pattern piece in your left hand and the white one in your right hand. Weave the first loop of the white piece inside the first loop of the red piece. Weave it over the second loop of the red piece, inside the third red loop, and over the fourth.

Weave the second loop of the white piece over the first loop of the red piece. Weave it inside the second red loop, over the third, and inside the fourth.

Weave the third white loop like the first and the fourth like the second. When you are done, the basket will look like the illustration and you will be able to open it up.

Ice Lanterns

Supplies

• Containers (any sort of bowl will do; square ones, round ones, tall ones, short ones!)

• Cups

• Something heavy to put in the cups to hold them in place (we used coins)

• Leaves, twigs, and/or berries

• A freezer (unless it’s below 0 degrees celsius outside; in that case, you can freeze your ice lantern outside).

First, venture into the garden to find some wintery treasures… dried berries, twigs, rosehips, and bits of pine all make for lovely additions.

Next, fill the bottom of your containers with the botanical items; this will be the ‘shelf’ for the candles to sit upon.

Then place your cup in the container and fill it with coins to keep it in place (this will hold a spot for the candle to go).

Then fill up the containers with water to about 3/4 of the way full.

You can put the ice lanterns in the freezer if it isn’t quite freezing outside. This is a good opportunity to observe the water moving from a liquid state at the beginning of the project to a solid state (ice) by the end.

When they are solid, take them out, and put a bit of warm water in the glass, to release it from the surrounding ice. To help, run water over the outside of the bowl to release the lanterns. Place candles in them and enjoy. Please share images of your lanterns with us.

Bird feeders ready for the weekend.

This weekend the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) is running a bird counting campaign (Big Garden Birdwatch) in the garden, and they want lots of people to get involved to help count the birds in our gardens. But to watch the birds, they need to be attracted. The best way to do this is to feed them. So, here are a couple of ideas for you to create bird feeders to attract some to your gardens.

Why not join in the bird count challenge?

What do you need:

• Binoculars

• Bird count sheet

• Bird identification sheet

• An hour from your weekend

Count the birds you see in your garden or from your balcony for one hour between 29 and 31 January 2021.

• Please only include those that land, not those flying over.

• Count the most birds you see at any one time, otherwise you could count the same bird twice. For example, if you saw a group of eight starlings, and towards the end of the hour you saw six starlings together, please write eight as your final count.

Go to rspb.org.uk/birdwatch to tell us what you saw.
• The more people who tell us what they saw, the better the picture we will have of how our garden birds are doing.
• Remember even if you saw nothing, it still counts.
• If you are unable to submit your result online, please complete and send us the enclosed form.
