Pathway to Patagonia

Mrs Moseley

Here is Mrs Moseley. A lot of our project was centred around her family story. Mrs Moseley's ancestors travelled to Patagonia on the Mimosa ship in 1865. She lived in Patagonia until she was an adult, speaking just Welsh and Spanish. Mrs Moseley now lives as part of our local community in Port Talbot. She shared many wonderful stories with us during her visits as part of the project.

Here are photographs of our Pathway to Patagonia displays in the Junior corridor. We learnt about Y Wladfa, Education, Workhouses, Mrs Moseley's story, Casa da Te Baglan, Wales Liverpool Connection, Sporting Nations and Animals of Patagonia.

Casa de Te Baglan

As part of our project, we held a Welsh-Patagonian traditional tea party. We invited our local community to the school for tea and traditional Welsh foods such as bara brith, Welsh cakes and bara menyn a jam. Pupils performed our Welsh Heritage production for our guests and pupils has the opportunity to chat with the community. Mrs Moseley also attended. This was a wonderful afternoon for all involved.

Letters and Replies

We sent a letter to Welsh First Minister, Mr Carwyn Jones to invite him to our Casa de Te and Welsh Heritage performance. We received a reply, however, he was busy at the Senedd during these events and was unable to make it.

We also invited the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot Council Borough, Mrs Marian Lewis who was delighted to accept our invitation and attended our Casa de Te.

Here is a newspaper report that Year 6 pupils wrote based on on true events from Y Wladfa in 1889.

Pupils and staff were invited to attend the Patagonia 150 Launch on 29th January 2015 to celebrate 150 years of Y Wladfa at the Royal Welsh College. It was organised by the British Council.

The First Minister for Wales at the time, Mr Carwyn Jones attended, accompanied by Lord Dafydd Wigley. Pupils and staff also met National Assembly Presiding Officer and AM for Newport West, Dame Rosemary Butler and the Ambassador to Argentina.
