In 2013 Baglan primary entered the Welsh Heritage competition with the topic, 'Life and Strife'. Pupils and staff were invited to the award ceremony in the summer term, here is the programme presented to us.
As part of our work n Baglan Hall, pupils learnt that Mr G.R.P Llewellyn rented out allotments at Swanfield Terrace, Baglan to members of the local community. This was on one condition- that it would be used for growing food and not for building houses.
Pupils compared maps and developed their understanding of how our local area has changed since the war.
During the project, pupils worked closely with members of the local and wider school community. Local residents came into school to speak to classes about their memories of Baglan during the war. We were in contact with Glamorgan archives, Neath Mechanics Institute, Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust, Baglan Library and St Catharine's Church. We also had the opportunity to interview a World War Two soldier, Mr Turner.
We held a tea party in our school hall and invited parents, grandparents and the local community for tea and cake. During this party, pupils had the opportunity to interview our guests to gather as much information as possible. We were able to share our research, pictures and comparisons of maps of the local area. This was a wonderful afternoon, with lots of grandparents sharing old stories and memories with us. We then shared our stage production with our guests. Here is an example of the information we gathered during the tea party.
