The spark of our Courage, Codes & Change theme started with local Port Talbot resident, Kath Morris who was a code breaker at Bletchley Park during World War Two. Mrs Morris turned 100 in 2024. Her inspiring work led us at Baglan primary to want to know more about the Warrior Women of Wales.
Kath Morris was born in Port Talbot on 7th March 1924. She worked as a code breaker at Bletchley Park during World War Two.
In 1942 she received a letter asking her to attend an interview in London. Within two weeks she caught the train to London to start work at 'Station X' which was its code name. Mrs Morris had to learn morse code, she and other code breakers had to work in huts. Code messages sent by the Nazis including orders from Adolf Hitler, were intercepted and then translated.
Mrs Morris had to sign the Official Secrets Act which is a promise to keep information secret. She has always loved puzzles. She still wears the brooch presented to her for her service at Bletchley Park.
Throughout our school, pupils learnt about many more Welsh Warrior Women and their inspiring work. Some of these include;
Gwenfron Picken
