Inquiry
At the start of this term we began with our poetry week where we studied the children's literacy laureate Joseph Coelho. We looked at his life, why he became a poet and some of his poems. We then read, reenacted and rewrote our own versions and performed these to the class. Throughout this term in our Inquiry, we have been focusing on civilisations from the past and how they are different from the present day. We started the term by looking at periods of time, including our own which meant we were able to create our own timelines. Moving on from this, we focused on how people in the past were able to survive. We researched the diet of early humans, known as hunter-gatherers, and compared it to what we eat in the modern day while recapping on the importance of healthy living and the Eatwell plate. Once we understood the diets of early humans, we learned about how people hunted and what they used. This enabled us to create our own flints made out of everyday bars of soap.
We then wrote instructions on how to make a sandwich which we would give to a Stone Age person if they were to come over to them for a meal. Moving on from this, we decided to write a diary entry as a character who has fallen into the stone age, inspired by the text Stone Age Boy. We also designed some amazing cave art. We then worked through the Stone Age time period and began comparing the Stone age with the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The children really enjoyed this Inquiry and were able to talk about lots of events and comparisons during these time periods.
Maths
In maths this term, we have been learning about multiplication and division. We have looked at a range of different methods including: partitioning, bar models and part whole models, to multiply and divide single and two digit numbers by 10 and single and two digit numbers, including bar models. We have also looked at single step and multiple step problem solving questions to help imbed our learning and make real life problem solving connections.
