What a fun term for Year 2!
This term we have been focusing on the impact of fire and how it can change society, with a big focus on The Great Fire of London. We started the term by looking at fire and what can cause it, as well as how to stay safe if we ever find ourselves near it. To help raise awareness of staying safe, we created posters on what to do if we saw a fire. As already mentioned, we have looked at The Great Fire of London. Children in Year 2 are able to recall facts about the significant event such as when it started, how it started and who by. To help them embed this knowledge further, the class wrote newspaper reports explaining the event and have had opportunities to make lots of comparisons between London in the 1600s to modern day. To understand why the fire spread so quickly, Year 2 has been learning about different everyday materials and their properties. They have been investigating the texture and shape of everyday materials such as paper, fabric, sponges, glass, metal and cardboard. Investigating these materials allowed them to find out what materials are suited to which objects and explain their reasons as to why.
In reading, Year 2 has been enjoying texts such as Vlad and the Great Fire of London. This is a fictional text about a flea called Vlad who lives on a rat known as Boxton. The children have been able to expand their vocabulary whilst reading this text, as well as develop their skills of inference and prediction.
In maths, we have been focusing on money and more recently, multiplication and division. We have just been introduced to the multiplication symbol and the children are really enjoying the concept of multiplying two numbers together.
It has been a busy term, with lots of practice SATs assessments but the children have been great! Have a great half term and we will see you in term 4!
