Being a student in an online setting may not be the best fit for all students or families. Being in an online school is hard work! It takes daily dedication, motivation, and good time management skills to do well in an online setting.
A common misconception about online learning is it's "quick" and "easy". Sometimes being in an online school may actually take MORE motivation (and time!) than being in a brick and mortar school.
Having an active learning coach supporting the student during the school day will be an important part of a student's success online. MNVA is not set up for students to school independently without the support of an active Learning Coach in the schooling environment.
Daily attendance in all classes, daily access to a computer, and daily access to the internet are important for student success.
Each day students must complete the daily required online lessons, online class connects, and any offline work that is assigned. Failure to complete all daily tasks may lead to attendance concerns. Additionally, it can be difficult for a student to "catch up" on missing work. Just as in a brick and mortar school, if a student is absent for a day, students must make up the work.
-Students must be motivated to be in an online school. Not all students learn best in an online setting (and that's okay!). If your student learns best from face to face interaction with a teacher in a school building, an online setting may not be the best educational experience for your student.
-As mentioned above, being in an online school is hard work. Being at home and enrolled in an online school may not make "going to school" any easier. If a student struggled with school motivation prior to attending an online school, there still may be motivation concerns while attending an online school. For students who experience difficulty with motivation, it will be important for a learning coach to be actively supporting and monitoring their student.
DAILY ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT FOR A STUDENT'S ONGOING SUCCESS.
"Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions, can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing subjects and ninth-graders dropping out of high school." - https://www.attendanceworks.org
"When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating." - https://www.attendanceworks.org

-Students and learning coaches must have active and open communication with teachers and school staff. Checking email and replying to email each day is important. Learning coaches and students must be in the habit of checking and replying to email to best support a student in the online school.
-Attending all school sessions is important.
-Students must complete their daily work with integrity.
-Setting up a daily school schedule is helpful for students to find success. Students may still have "homework" to complete after their typical school day to be prepared for the next school day.
