Welcome to Instrumental Music!
Here, you learn how to play an instrument (your choice). You will learn to read music, write and compose music, and of course, perform! This program is where everyone begins their music journey at SMC. This is a play-based program, which is where most of your grade will come from!
Here, you learn how to play an instrument (your choice). You will learn to read music, write and compose music, and of course, perform! This program is where everyone begins their music journey at SMC. This is a play-based program, which is where most of your grade will come from!
In Grade Nine: You choose an instrument, and we build your skills to the point where all instruments are playing together in harmony. We play popular music and stick with well-known tunes... most of the time. You also learn how to write music by hand and with technology (www.flat.io - a music writing website). Our big finale and exam, is participating in a live concert that features some of the arts programs. We usually have a bit of a party. Yes, your families and friends are invited to help us keep the music program going! Usually, the big bang is this class playing one piece with the senior class to make a giant band of 60+ students! We always end the semester with reflection to bring what we have learned to a close.

Grade 10, 11, and 12 students are combined into one big group! This always ends up being an amazing course where you make lifelong friends and continue to play harder music together. Although we spent most time practicing, we spend some time learning to compose original music and learning about chord structure based on past and new music theory. You could be a pop song writer in the making! We always end the semester off by travelling and performing at nursing homes or other charity events and performing with the other arts programs in an end-of-term fundraiser to keep the program going! The most amazing aspect of continuing to take music throughout your high school journey is that it is considering a college and university acceptable credit! It could be part of your top six marks when applying to post-secondary institutes!
