Guitar begins at the grade 10 level and is offered as a grade 11/12 split if you continue. Taking Gr. 9 Instrumental is beneficial, but it’s not a requirement!

Grade Ten: This is the basics course! You learn how to read music, tab and chord chards. You learn note-to-note playing (where soloing begins) and you learn how to play basic chords. We learn as a group, at first. Then, you get to choose your own songs to play! This is a play-based course, but because guitar is tricky to play for long periods of time when you first start, we learn about music theory and the history of the guitar! Don’t worry about playing your own tunes. Your teacher will help guide you to find what is right for you! This course is very independent because you get to play what you want once you get hold of the basics! We end the semester by reflecting on our time together. If you have ever wanted to learn how to play guitar, this is the course for you!

Grade Eleven/Twelve: This course is where you get time to expand on their skills. Whether you want to play more metal, rock and roll, folk, or jazz, you get to choose. You fill out practice logs to make sure your goals are realistic and get to choose the music you play by researching first and making an action plan to achieve your playing goals! We still continue to learn about music theory, but it is strictly geared to writing songs and writing your own solos. This course is also designed to do some group play by choosing music, making the arrangement of parts, and performing it at the end of the semester along with other arts programs. Yes, your family and friends are invited to help us celebrate and fundraise to keep our program going!
