Pat Bremner

Brief Biography:

I lived in Calgary for most of my life. I am the youngest of six children, attended various schools and finished my basic education at St. Mary’s Girls’ High School. In later years, I earned two degrees: Journalism Arts and Human Resources Administration. I enjoyed a thirty five year career in the food manufacturing industry and accepted a lateral transfer in 2003 to Taber. After my retirement in 2010, I decided to stay in Southern Alberta.

Why do you want to serve as a Trustee for Holy Spirit Catholic Schools?

Life without an education can be very bleak, not only economically but personally. Education empowers people to view the world through informed lenses. The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division has a reputation for excellence and I wanted to be part of the holistic teaching style and environment in which children are seen as physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual beings who are children of God.

In your opinion, what's the most important issue facing Catholic education today?

Secularism is the greatest threat to Catholic education. In a secular society, people are mere economic units as Pope Francis tells us. Education is more than preparing children for the work force; it is a period of time for them to learn how to love themselves and build on the gifts they have been given.

Who was your most influential teacher/educator and why?

My mother, a residential school survivor who spent most of her life laboring in a meat plant, taught me the dignity of work, the importance of listening to the underdog, the power of prayer and the awareness that everyone has a story and every story should be heard.
