Music Extra Curricular

hc Strings

The String Group is a brand new small ensemble in Holy Cross' music program. The group was established in 2020 by a small group of senior students and their director, Mr. Sinsay. The current string players perform various repertoire and practice together in their small ensemble once a week. Due to their recent debut, the group is still growing, improving, and bonding with each other through their practices. The string group also plays alongside the choir during school masses.

Jazz combos

Holy Cross has student-led jazz combos, allowing each student to explore the jazz genre even more and improve their skills with friends.

Flavo

One of our current jazz combos, Flavo, is composed of six Grade 11 students, coming from a wide range of musical skill and experience. Together they have expanded their knowledge and passion for jazz music by means of their own arrangements. With humble beginnings, Flavo has learned to work together and discovered the absolute importance of communication between musicians. In the previous year, have performed at the 2020 Surrey Jazz Festival, along with several Holy Cross Music events.

Feel free to take a look at Flavo's official YouTube channel!

the sevens

The 7s are a Jazz Fusion Combo formed by the Tenor Saxophonist Adrian Ibarra, including Aaron Luciano (Pianist), Sean Dela Cruz (Drummer), Liam Conway (Bassist), and Payton Chiang (Guitarist).

Not including elementary school, The 7s were originally formed in grade 8 without a name. Due to Covid mishaps and member mistakes, they were shut down. Returning in Grade 10, they're back to reignite the fire that was once lit, and belt out some serious music.

Though the first songs proposed for the group were hardbop-style jazz, Adrian has been influenced and inspired by the unique style of japanese jazz-fusion, and has adapted the combo to this freer, less constricted side of jazz.

Indigo

Indigo is one of our newest jazz combos which consists of eight Grade 9s. Throughout the year, they have been playing for our school's Combo recitals and are looking forward to continue playing.

indie/Rock band combo

Our Music Department offers a chance to be in a student-lend Indie/Rock combo, this combo gives opportunities to students to learn more about this Indie genre of music and improve their overall understanding of music exploration.

The current Indie/Rock Combo is Groovy, this group is made up of six female Grade 10 students, all coming from different musical talents to join and make a new musical experience. As a group, they have enlarged their knowledge and excitement for Indie/Rock music, working together to make new arrangements and trying new things to see what works best. This group has taught members the best thing about music is being able to, and inspired to share their love of music with each other and all audiences. In the past year, they performed in the 2 combo recitals during Christmas and Halloween, as well as playing in various Holy Cross Music Events.

FUN FACT: Groovy has been learning all the songs they have performed by ear.

dRumline

The HC Drumline was established in 2021. This group consists of a group of young individuals who play the snare drums, bass drums, tenor drums, and cymbals. As of right now, the drumline has performed for events such as the Fall Pep rally, and Cops for Cancer. The Drumline was also planning to play during other school-wide events such as the Winter Pep Rally, and BC Catholics.
