World Languages Department Goals and Competencies

The World Language Department strives to encourage and enable students to become agents of positive change in a globalized world by cultivating

  • linguistic skills for effective communication in a target language.

  • cultural awareness, curiosity, and knowledge.

  • a capacity for culturally sensitive interaction with speakers of a target language.

  • an understanding of how language reflects, shapes, and transforms perspectives.

WL1 - Linguistic skills for effective communication in a target language

INTERPRETIVE MODE

WL1-a. I can identify the general topic and some basic information in both very familiar and everyday contexts by recognizing practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences in texts that are spoken or written (Novice).

WL1-b. I can understand the main idea and some pieces of information on familiar topics from sentences and series of connected sentences within texts that are spoken or written. I can make myself understood in the target language both in writing and speaking (Intermediate).

WL1-c. I can understand the main message and supporting details on a wide variety of familiar and general interest topics across various time frames from complex, organized texts that are spoken or written (Advanced)

INTERPERSONAL MODE

WL1-d. I can communicate in spontaneous spoken or written conversations on both very familiar and everyday topics, using a variety of practiced or memorized words, phrases, simple sentences, and questions (Novice).

WL1-e.I can participate in spontaneous spoken or written conversations on familiar topics, creating sentences and series of sentences to ask and answer a variety of questions (Intermediate).

WL1-f. I can maintain spontaneous spoken, or written, conversations and discussions across various time frames on familiar, as well as unfamiliar, concrete topics, using series of connected sentences and probing questions (Advanced).

PRESENTATION MODE

WL1-g, I can present information on both very familiar and everyday topics using a variety of practiced or memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences through spoken or written language (Novice).

WL1-h. I can communicate information, make presentations, and express my thoughts about familiar topics, using sentences and series of connected sentences through spoken or written language (Intermediate).

WL1-i. I can deliver detailed and organized presentations on familiar as well as unfamiliar concrete topics, in paragraphs and using various time frames through spoken, or written language (Advanced).

WL2 - Cultural awareness, curiosity, and knowledge

WL2-a. I can investigate, explain, and reflect on the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and my own.

WL2-b. I can learn about the values of a wide range of concrete and abstract products from different viewpoints in my own and other cultures

WL2-c. I can explain how different cultural contexts influence perspectives and interpretations of a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon.

WL2-d. I can access and evaluate information and diverse perspectives that are available through the language and its cultures.

WL3 - Capacity for culturally sensitive interaction with speakers of a target language

WL3-a. I can demonstrate awareness of differences among cultural behaviors and adjust my behavior accordingly in familiar and some unfamiliar situations.

WL3-b. I can communicate ideas with respect and empathy, accounting for the thoughts, opinions, and norms of others.

WL2-c. I can suspend judgement, adapt my language, and make appropriate cultural references when interacting with others from the target culture.

WL4 - Understanding of how language reflects, shapes, and transforms perspectives

WL4-a. I can understand that differences in grammar and syntax reflect the variety of cultural approaches to communication.

WL4-b. I understand that different cultures assign and acknowledge personal responsibility and agency in different ways on a continuum from face-saving to open statements.

WL4-c. I can discern and understand that diverse linguistic expression enriches my experience as a language learner.

WL4-d. I can interpret and infer meaning from dense, structurally sophisticated texts on a wide range of topics.

WL5 - A lifelong desire to hone language competencies

WL5-a. I recognize the importance and benefits of language learning in today’s globalized world.

WL5-b. I cultivate a passion for both language learning and cultural understanding.

WL5-c. I strengthen my ability to use the target language to interact with people from local, national, and global communities.

WL5-d. I continue to seek active engagement with people of diverse languages, perspectives, and practices.
