VA2 - PROBLEM SOLVING AND PERSEVERANCE

Through creating and exhibiting art, we build creative muscle to approach problems and opportunities with tenacity and innovation.

VA2-f. I see creative challenges as a way to learn about myself and how I respond to open-ended prompts.

VA2-g. I can appreciate that process is more important than the final product.

VA3 - VISUAL LITERACY

Through engaging with artwork of others, both past and present, we gain practice in interpreting and sharing non-literal messages, a critical need in a visual/expressive world.

VA3-a. I can explore the hidden stories of artworks from other times and cultures by considering questions such as: what do I notice and wonder about this work of art? What is the meaning of this work of art? What does this artwork tell us about its creator and the context within which it was made?

VA3-b. I can understand how the ideas that are shown through images in artwork, advertising, books, and digital sources reinforce or question social, historical and cultural contexts that can affect my perception of the world.

VA3-c. I can research an artist’s life and social/historical/cultural context to better understand a piece of artwork and how it can further instruct my own artwork.

VA3-d. I understand how to critically engage a piece of artwork in such a way that I am being constructive in my critique of fellow artists.

VA4 - GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP AND PERSPECTIVE TAKING

Through making and engaging with art, we build our understanding of the interconnectedness of academic disciplines and our world.

VA4-a. I can make connections between visual art and writing, performing arts, language, math and science.

VA4-b. I can articulate how artists expressed their ideas and beliefs in response to the cultural, geographic, societal and historical influences of their time and place and have contributed to what we understand as the modern world.

VA4-c. I can communicate how my own art is influenced by the world and people around me.

VA4-d. I can analyze how social media has influenced how we perceive art and how it is broadcast.

VA5 - CULTIVATING THE SOUL

We understand that art is a source of inspiration and understanding of ourselves and others. We refresh our spirits and connect with our community through making and engaging with art (on every scale--from our school and local communities to our role as global citizens).

VA5-a. I use my time in the art studio as a meditative moment in my day to relax and unfocus my mind in order to experience a sense of “flow” as I create.

VA5-b. Through the projects assigned to me, I can develop a greater understanding of myself and a better understanding of my place in the world.

VA5-c. I can convey my unique perspective on the world and share my vision through my artwork.

VA5-d. I can empathize and support my fellow artists when they work through the creative process.
