drunk driving

Community Need:

In 2018, 10,511 people died due to drunk driving related accidents in the United States. This is a need that has been around in the US since the beginning. There needs to be more awareness about the dangers of drunk driving in order to prevent people from getting behind the wheel when they are under the influence. During the holidays there is usually a spike in drunk driving related accidents, so it is especially important to address this need now. Our project will meet this need by informing our peers and other people in our community about why it is important to not drink in drive. We are also raising money and will donate it to organizations that are spreading awareness about this issue.

Project Goals:

Our main goal is to help spread awareness. We are selling bracelets for $3 and hoping that everyone will wear them. The money that we get from selling our bracelets will be donated to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. We have sold 50 bracelets so far, but we hope to sell 25 more. By partnering with the Holliston Police Department we are hoping to raise awareness by posting various signs around town. Some signs promote what we are doing, and some signs give facts and information on drunk driving.

Community Partnerships:

Holliston Police Department:

We plan on partnering with the Holliston Police department. We chose the police department because they have experienced, first hand, the consequences of drunk driving. We would like to talk to them about their experiences and see if they have any recommendations for us to help raise awareness.

Town Hall:

We plan on talking to the Town Hall. We figured they would have the best understanding on how to spread the world throughout town.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving:

We also plan on donating to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The mission of this organization is to end drunk driving , support victims who were in drunk driving related accidents, and to prevent underage drinking. We will be able to donate the money on their website https://www.madd.org/.

Authentic Auto Body and Coffee Haven:

These local businesses have been helping us sell our bracelets in their store.

Upcoming Events and Informational Tools:

Drunk Simulation Goggles

Being under the influence greatly reduces both a person's reaction time, as well as their ability to make sound decisions. Many people underestimate the effects of alcohol on their mind and body, so we did our best to find an accurate way to demonstrate these effects. The "Fatal Vision" drunk goggles, accurately represent the effects of alcohol with a BAC of between .07 and .10%. Please watch and share our short video, and understand that aclohol has inevitable effects on the human body.

Virtual Assembly - Video

Rather than a Zoom assembly, we are releasing a video version of our presentation on Drunk Driving. All of us will be speaking during this video, and our guest speaker Officer DiGiorgio, school resource officer here at HHS, will be saying a few words as well. The vieo will be focused on spreading awareness for drunk driving and educating both students and teachers at Holliston Highschool on its many dangers. The link will be posted here, so all are welcome. As always, #drivesober.
