We are a group of five girls who didn’t really know each other until the start of the Service Learning Class. We all have different characteristics and abilities that combine and work together, allowing our Food 4 Thought project to grow and make a positive difference. All five of us have become friends and are all very passionate about this project and making a difference in our community.

Hunger has always been an issue in America, but now with COVID-19 the number of Americans facing food insecurity has significantly increased.
Over 30 million children rely on free or reduced meals from school, now with the pandemic only 15% of those students are getting those lunches they need.
Hunger affects over 50 million people in America, thats 1 in 6 of the US population, and 1 in 5 children.
It is predicted that more than 130 million people will face food crisis in 2020.
1 in 7 Americans rely on food pantries and food services to get meals to their families and themselves.
We wanted to raise money to support an organization in Framingham called Daniel’s Table, who are serving meals to over 5 times the amount of people due to the increase in food insecurity brought about by the covid-19 pandemic.
Daniel’s Table offers a “funding a family” program that would benefit many families during the upcoming Thanksgiving season and provide them with full healthy meals.
With a $50 donation, Daniel’s Table will provide 25 full meals to individuals in need.
We set a goal of raising $1000 for Daniel’s Table, and created a GoFundMe in order to meet this goal by inviting others in our community to donate money to support our cause.
Our grand total ended up being $543!
To advertise our GoFundMe and be able to reach our goal before the holidays, we created an Instagram account (@food.4.thought2020) where we frequently create posts to educate others about the food pantry crisis. Since we are not able to see people in person as much anymore, we figured using social media as a way to spread the word would be the most effective.
Outside of social media, we have also designed flyers to hang up near local businesses in our community with a QR code for people to scan that will take them to our GoFundMe so they can donate in a safe way. (flyers are located below!)
After Thanksgiving, we planned a selective pick up drive (only some neighborhoods will receive a flyer in their mailbox and be able to participate) to collect shelf stable items for Daniel's Table. The second flyer is also located below, and it contains information about what goods we are looking for and how to help.
Our schedule pick-up date was January 9th, where we collected almost 20 full bags of food that we later dropped off at Daniel's Table.
In addition, we are especially grateful to have had the opportunity to visit Daniel’s Table twice to get a closer look at what they do and how their hard work is impacting the community.
We used the footage from our tour of Daniel’s Table, as well as photo and video evidence of the work we’ve been doing, to create a documentary informing others of our project process and the need to eliminate food insecurity in our country. The documentary is showcased at the bottom of this page next to the image slideshow.
Our community partnership is a non-project food bank called Daniel’s Table located in Framingham, MA. Daniels Table provides food security to families in need, with healthy and good meals and groceries that include fresh fruit and a variety of different nutritional items. They also strive to educate and empower people in the community to make nutritious choices. The two founders, David and Alicia Blais, are very passionate about helping their “neighbors” as they like to say. A couple of months ago we reached out to them to ask them how we could help accommodate their needs. Our project is all about helping food banks or food pantries with what they need and educating others. After a few discussions with Daniel’s Table, we decided the best way we could help them was to raise money and awareness. 50 dollars =25 meals, so our goal is to provide/fund for as many meals as possible. They’ve been very generous and cooperative with us, letting us be able to visit the faculty, take a tour, and learn more about food security and what they do.
We created a Go Fund Me to help provide meals for families in need during the holiday season, and every $50 donated helps serve 25 meals. We also created an instagram with more information on helping Daniel’s Table. Here is the link and the QR code for the Go Fund Me along with the link for the instagram page:
