Studying abroad is a transformative experience that allows you to expand your worldview, build independence, and develop skills valued by employers. Whether you’re exploring new cultures, learning a language, or gaining hands-on experience in your field, studying abroad helps you grow personally, academically, and professionally. It is also an experience that benefits from early and thoughtful planning, ideally beginning in your first year at Hofstra.
Hofstra offers a wide range of study abroad options to help students in every major incorporate an international experience into their four-year academic plan.
Faculty-Led Programs: Led by Hofstra faculty who travel with students, these short-term programs (typically one to four weeks) combine lectures, site visits, and cultural activities directly connected to the coursework. These trips are offered during January, summer, and spring break.
Exchange Programs: Ideal if you are looking for independence, cultural immersion, and academic flexibility, these programs allow you to spend a semester or academic year at one of Hofstra partner universities in Europe or Asia. You will take courses with local students, while continuing to pay Hofstra tuition.
Provider Programs: These programs offer you the flexibility to choose from a wide range of academic experiences in various countries. Housing, cultural excursions, and on-site staff are often included.
Many programs do not require prior foreign language study and offer courses in English. However, gaining some familiarity with the host country’s language is strongly encouraged to support cultural engagement, daily navigation, and overall success abroad.
Meet with the Office of Study Abroad Programs to discuss how you can receive Hofstra credit for the courses you complete abroad. Depending on the program type and duration, you may be able to fulfill some distribution, minor, and/or major requirements abroad. It is also recommended to discuss your study abroad plans with your CUA advisor and faculty advisor in your declared major department.
