Student Access Services (SAS) ensures equal access to the University’s programs, services, and facilities for students with documented disabilities. SAS is dedicated to student learning and development through the utilization of individualized accommodations and purposeful interactions. SAS provides support and services that are tailored to meet the needs of individuals based on their specific, appropriately documented requirements, while preserving Hofstra’s academic integrity and high standards of academic expectations and performance.
Students requesting reasonable accommodations based on a disability must complete a Request for Reasonable Accommodations (Academic or Housing) Form found on the SAS website at www.Hofstra.edu/sas; each form must be accompanied by supporting documentation. All completed requests are reviewed in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other federal laws pertaining to disability and higher education. SAS staff members are available to help students with the request form process, and then work with students to determine which accommodations are appropriate for their needs at the college level.
Reasonable accommodations are provided free of charge to all eligible students who are approved through the SAS registration process. For more information about applying for reasonable accommodations through SAS or to access SAS forms, visit hofstra.edu/sas, call 516-463-7075, or email SAS@hofstra.edu.
In addition to arranging accommodations, a major part of the mission of SAS is to help students develop the skills they need to be effective self-advocates at Hofstra and beyond. Its programs and services encourage active involvement from students in managing their own disabilities, while offering support along the way. SAS also administers the Program for Academic Learning Skills (PALS) and Academic Coaching Program (ACP) see below.
During the past 45 years, the Program for Academic Learning Skills (PALS) has been serving students with specific learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD at Hofstra University. Students should apply to PALS during their initial application to Hofstra University. This fee-based program provides eligible students with an opportunity to work one-on-one with a specialist, focusing on learning, study techniques, and life skills. PALS fosters a dynamic, innovative partnership between students and their instructors, contributing to enriching the student experience in alignment with their unique intellectual profile and academic aspirations.
These personalized sessions target specific areas such as academics, time management, executive functioning strategies, stress management, writing proficiency skills, and social adjustment. Additionally, the program serves as a connection point, linking the student to robust campus resources.
The fee for PALS is $8,000 during the student’s first year at Hofstra. The subsequent years are billed at $5,500 each year. For additional information about PALS documentation requirements, please call 516-463-7075 or email SAS@hofstra.edu
All Hofstra students are welcome to request enrollment in the Academic Coaching Program (ACP). ACP is a fee-based program designed to assist participants in developing their academic and study skills. The Academic Coaching Program offers a flexible and short-term opportunity to receive personalized support from a learning specialist. Sessions focus on academic and study skills, including learning style awareness and effective study methods.
The fee for this program is $2,750 per semester. Students may enroll in the program for a single semester or for a longer period. Sessions begin the second week of the term and continue through the last day of classes for the semester. For each semester of enrollment, the student will receive up to 60 minutes of individualized coaching sessions per week (based on need), a semester action plan, access to SAS workshops, and a final summary of achievements and recommendations at the end of the term. Academic Coaching is based upon availability for each semester.
