Writing and GPaS

Click here to find out about this week's writing work (Monday 13th July):

This week, we come to the end of Year 4! We would like you to reflect back over your time in Year 4 and share your memories of this unusual year in all our lives. There is a new Flipgrid especially for us to share these memories, so please send us a video of yours on there, if you can!

We are also concluding our writing focus based on the texts of ‘The Iron Man’ and ‘The Iron Woman’ by Ted Hughes, inspired by the environmental themes in ‘The Iron Woman’.

We would love for you to complete Task One and then choose at least one more task from any of the other options - it’s up to you!

Remember that you should try to compose your piece of writing as independently as possible, but ask an adult to read through and check your work once complete. As always, remember to check your spelling, punctuation, use of grammar and that your writing makes sense. Join your letters too!

We encourage you to share your amazing writing and you can use our Iron Man Flipgrid below for any work you want to submit about the Iron Man, the Iron Woman or the environment. You could also use the 'Share your Work' form on the Year 4 welcome page. If you do this, it's much easier for us to display your work for your friends to see if you upload a photo instead of a word document. And please remember to write your name on your written work before you photograph it!

You will also find some GPaS work about prefixes and all sorts of resources to help you with your spellings and handwriting. Just click on the button below to take you to our GPAS page.

Have fun!

GPAS tasks for this week

Please share your memories of Year 4 on this Flipgrid. We hope many of you will take part so we can enjoy remembering and celebrating together!

Or you can use the sharing form on the Year 4 home page.

You will need a Google login from school to use the Flipgrid. To get yours, just email: homelearninghelp@heronhill.cumbria.sch.uk

Writing Task One:

Create your own poster about your memories of Year 4.

What was your favourite activity/lesson? Which subject did you enjoy most and why? What was the most important thing you learnt in Y4? What have you improved at whilst being in Y4? Record any significant memories you have of this year. Think about the time you spent in school and your experiences of lock-down too!

OR: complete one of the 'Memories of Y4' activities below.

Remember to share your work on the Flipgrid above!

Use this Flipgrid to share your story about the Iron Man or the Iron Woman, and what you have learned about recycling and looking after our planet.

Other writing challenges:

Writing Task Two: Iron Man/Woman Story

Having watched the videos of the stories of ‘The Iron Man’ and ‘The Iron Woman’, write your own version of either of the stories. Be as creative and imaginative as you like - where did he/she come from? What happened when he/she appeared on earth? Who did he/she meet? What did they do together? Does your story have both the Iron Man and the Iron Woman? What happens to him/her in the end?

Writing Task Three: Recycled Picture Description

The Iron Woman showed that we should all try not to waste things but to re-use them as much as possible. Use old magazines, newspapers, comics and books to make your own imaginary scene. Cut out pictures of people, places and objects and arrange them to create an imaginary scene then write a description of the scene.

Writing Task Four: Five Ways to help our earth
