May the Force be With You!

This week, we continue with our Science theme, 'May the Force be with You!'

This week we'd like you to explore the forces of friction and gravity. There are all sorts of activities and experiments here for you to do. Choose one or more that you would like to try. Have fun!

We would love to see what you have been learning about forces. Please use the Flipgrid below to show us! Or you can use the upload form on the Year 4 welcome page.

Ideas for you to try at home this week

Start by looking at the short presentation to the left.

Then watch this very short video about friction.

Now choose one or more of the creative activities and experiments below to see what you can learn about friction!

Marble run

Design and make a marble run with various surfaces. Which surfaces have the least friction and help the marble to go the fastest?

The web-links below may help you!

Car and ramp friction experiment

Set up an experiment using a ramp and a toy car to see which surface creates the most or the least friction. You could use the sheet provided to record your results.

Film yourself as if you were walking on the moon!

Find out about the force of gravity - what sort of force is it? Imagine you are walking on the moon.

Moon-walker Harrison Schmitt described it like this: “Walking on the moon felt like walking on a giant's trampoline - you are only one-sixth your weight but just as strong as on Earth. One could walk with great long strides like those of a cross-country skier, gliding just above the surface and across small craters and using a well-timed toe-push to accelerate to ever higher speeds and ever longer strides. Stopping was another matter! Just rotate so that your heels dig into the soft surface and you stop.”

You may find it helpful to look at this presentation about Gravity first.

Make a paper helicopter- investigate air resistance and gravity

Investigate the way paper flies by experimenting with your own paper helicopter. This weblink shows you how. There is also a template on the right if you prefer.

If you want to go on to develop your own science experiment from this, look at the presentation, design your experiment and use the sheet to record your results!
