Unit 6:

Two Variable Statistics

In Algebra 1, students demonstrate fluency by creating, comparing, analyzing, solving, providing multiple representations, and identifying the structures of  exponential & quadratic functions building on the understanding of linear functions from grade 8 to apply linear, quadratic and exponential models to data and unfamiliar problems.

The Story of Alg. 1 - Unit 6: Two Variable Statistics

(Up to 15 days)

As the title suggests the focus of this unit is two variable statistics, the big ideas of this unit being fitting functions to scatter plots and two-way frequency tables.  Both standards “live” in Claim 4; therefore, context, using mathematics to model the real-world, and solving problems should be the continual focus.  This unit is a chance to formatively assess, interleave, anad reengage around much of the material from the units that have come before as students fit linear, exponential, and quadratic functions to data.  Depth can be explored by spending time exploring linear functions & data (S-ID.7-9) reengaging 8th grade and earlier units in this course; this can be embedded in first instruction as well.  Two-way frequency tables also extend from 8th grade into this unit as a big idea and possibly into geometry by incorporating probability for increased depth, time permitting.

Unit 6 Notes

Two variable statistics is a chance to apply what has been learned in Units 2-5 as students fit a function to data (S-ID.6).  It is yet another chance to review slope and intercept of a linear function (S-ID.7).  This unit builds on 8th grade work.
