In Algebra 1, students demonstrate fluency by creating, comparing, analyzing, solving, providing multiple representations, and identifying the structures of exponential & quadratic functions building on the understanding of linear functions from grade 8 to apply linear, quadratic and exponential models to data and unfamiliar problems.
The Story of Algebra 1 (How the Year Unfolds)
Students begin Algebra 1 exploring various contexts by applying Statistics to learn more about each other and the real world. Funtions I provides a course overview by exploring three types of growth graphically - linear growth, exponential growth & quadratic growth; it also acquaints students with function features, language and notation. Targets learned here will appy throughout the remainder of the course. Students then take deeper dives into each type of growth with systems being a focus in each in order to compare and contrast them. While students are becoming fluent with linear functions from 8th grade, this work is embedded within Systems of Linear Equations & Inequalities. Sequences act as a natural transition from linear functions to Exponential Functions where a system of a linear & an exponential are compared and contrasted. The final system to be explored is a linear & quadratic system as students enter Quadratic Functions, which includes a comparison of all three types of growth as students realize exponential growth eventually exceeds the other types of growth explored in this course. Conceptual understanding and procedural proficiency developed to this point are applied to Two Variable Statistics to ensure procedural fluency and knowledge transfer. Functions II provides a chance for further application and transfer as students identify and apply the three types of growth to unfamiliar problems while also encountering other unfamiliar functions not previous covered in this course. Throughout the course, students utilize Essential Connecting Standards to provide clarity and coherence, illustrating how all units are related.
