Unit 2:

Graphing Functions

(course overview)

In Algebra 1, students demonstrate fluency by creating, comparing, analyzing, solving, providing multiple representations, and identifying the structures of  exponential & quadratic functions building on the understanding of linear functions from grade 8 to apply linear, quadratic and exponential models to data and unfamiliar problems.

The Story of Algebra 1 - Unit 2: Graphing Functions (Up to 10 days)

The overarching goals of this unit are to introduce functions and the course in general. The big ideas of function concepts & notation with interpreting functions help meet both goals. Reasoning quantitatively and using units to solve problems are connecting standards, standards that repeat throughout multiple units, and can be explored explicitly to provide depth or interleaved when interpreting functions to support those who struggled in the previous unit. By selecting linear functions, exponential functions, quadratic functions, and other functions presented in symbolic form, as tables, or especially as graphs - all in context - an overview of the entire course is created and a foundation is laid for understanding each in greater detail in future units.

Unit 2 Notes

Remember this is just an introduction to functions and the three different types of growth explored in this course.  By graphing linear functions, exponential functions, and quadratic functions from a context - an overview of the entire course is created and a foundation is laid for understanding each in greater detail in future units.  In the process, key features of graphs and function basics can be explored in different contexts.
