Data explorations can be incorporated into “Getting to Know You” activities where they explore statistical questions centered around the population of their new math class. Including the teacher in the data collection may present students with an opportunity to explore the effect of an outlier.
The idea of leading with statistical analysis was to have it be an introduction to the theme of real life data analysis and application being the focus for the year; as different patterns/sequences/functions are taught, we learn more about how to identify and interpret the data we are examining applying it to events and situations.
