It is expected that a student will give careful consideration to course selections. Teachers, counselors and parents/guardians can assist students in making important final decisions affecting their course choices.
A student who registers for a course has made a commitment to complete the course. Should the student encounter difficulty, teachers and counselors will be available to help explore the reasons for the problem and to consider alternatives other than dropping the course.
Note: Student schedules and plans are subject to change based upon course availability and successful course completion.
Schedule Changes
Once the master schedule is in place, it will be extremely difficult to make changes without negatively impacting other students and teachers. Students and parents/guardians are asked to review their schedule for accuracy and completeness. If a class needs to be changed, students and/or parents/guardians should contact the School Counseling Office as soon as possible.
Add/Drop Period
A student can drop and/or add a course to their schedule within the first five days of the semester. If a student enrolls in a full year course, there is an expectation that the student will complete both semesters of the course to earn the full credit. In most cases, dropping the course after the 1st semester is not permitted.
Course Withdrawal
If a student fails to drop a class during the first five days of the semester, then the student will receive either a “WD” or “WF” on his or her transcript.
“WD” signifies a withdrawal from the class with a passing grade. A “WD” will not impact a student’s cumulative grade point average. A “WD” will be awarded to a student who withdraws from a course prior to the close of the first grading period for that course.
“WF” signifies a withdrawal from the class with a failing grade. A “WF” will negatively impact a student’s cumulative grade point average. A “WF” will be awarded to a student who withdraws from a course after the close of the first grading period for that course.
Advanced Coursework
Hillsboro-Deering High School encourages and values students’ drive to challenge themselves academically and intellectually when deciding on courses in which they choose to enroll. H-DHS fosters open enrollment in all courses, and we recognize that students make strong gains over the course of the academic year. However, choosing to move from a college preparatory course to an advanced level can be challenging. Students who wish to enroll in an advanced course must meet with their previous teacher to discuss the impact it may have and the appropriateness of this decision. For example, a meeting with the previous teacher would need to occur if a student completes World History his/her first year and decides he/she would like to enroll in AP US History for his/her sophomore year. If the teacher is uncomfortable with the move to the higher level course, the next step in the process would be to meet with the high school principal in order to continue the discussion.
