The goal of the H-DHS Art Program is to offer students a hands-on opportunity to explore their own artistic abilities and to develop an appreciation of the arts via a multitude of mediums.

827 - 2D Art Full Year 1 credit

This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of creating 2 dimensional art works through a range of media, which includes pencil, pastel, pen and ink, acrylic paint, and watercolor. Understanding and applying the elements and principles of design is emphasized while working with stylized and realistic subject matters. Through a series of projects students will develop an understanding of the various methods, materials and techniques of drawing and painting.
808 – Photography and Design Full Year 1 credit
Recommended: 10th, 11th, and 12th grade
This course would satisfy a student’s Computer Technology requirement.
Photography and Design 1 is a hands-on course designed to expose students to photography and design as an art form. The first half of the year students will be introduced to the mechanics of the film camera, and the developing process using the darkroom. The second half will be devoted to learning digital camera techniques and Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn to analyze their own work and that of others. Time management, creative design and problem solving will be emphasized in this course. It is recommended, but not necessary for students to have their own film and digital cameras.

This course would satisfy a student’s Computer Technology requirement.
Graphic design communicates a visual message with text and imagery through the use of the elements and principles of design. In this course students will learn how to problem solve, and to communicate a visual message through the use of Adobe Illustrator software. Students start from the ground up learning software basic tools and techniques to create and explore a multitude of designs. This is a project-based course, which will deal with aesthetics (what is visually pleasing) and with functionality (what does the job).
805 – Ceramics 1 Full Year 1 credit

Ceramics is a hands-on course introducing students to hand-built and wheel-thrown projects using clay. The craft of ceramics (pottery) is one of the oldest visual art forms, and combines both technical knowledge and creative expression. Construction methods, glazing and firing will be explained and demonstrated to create functional and decorative pieces. Written assignments will be an integral part of this course.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to use the pottery wheel? In this course students will learn the technique and process of wheel thrown ceramics. Students will create vessels with a focus on form and function. Different surface decoration techniques will be highlighted along with handles and glaze application
826 - Crafts Full Year 1 credit
Recommended: All grades
Crafts is a hands-on course developed to introduce students to crafts as an art form. Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of the ways that crafts are valued and rooted in the many cultures of the world. Students will learn methods such as book making, beading, felting, wire work, printmaking, fabric surface design, glasswork and weaving. Planning, creative design and problem solving will be emphasized in this course in the creation of decorative and functional pieces.
807 - Sculpture Full Year 1 credit
Recommended: 10th, 11th, and 12th grade
Prerequisite: Must have prior HS Art course experience
Sculpture explores the basics of three-dimensional design. Students will explore both reductive and additive sculpture methods. A variety of media will be explored such as cardboard, wire, plaster, foam, and clay. The study of major artists and styles will be explored to enhance student understanding.
