The Hwa Chong Student Leadership Framework aims to inculcate in students the values of Bilingual, Entrepreneurial Servant Leadership.
This framework aims to develop students into competent leaders who not only possess the ability and skills to take charge of matters, but also have a genuine desire to take on responsibilities to serve and better the lives of the people around them.
Through the framework, students are exposed to evolution of leadership theories, and concepts of leadership attributes and skills, leadership styles and management styles, which provides a general background that can help students better analyse situations using a variety of perspectives. It also provides the common language, which facilitates and enhances communications within the leadership context. These conceptual knowledge are explicitly taught in the Leadership Sabbatical, a certification course crafted for student leaders nominated from the Students' Council, CCAs and other student leadership bodies.
Leadership is not learned in isolation. It is learned best in real life applications when relating with different groups of people, be it with adults or their peers. Hence, in the post-course follow-up, students can apply the leadership concepts learnt through a large variety of experiential programmes. Their leadership skills are consolidated through a peer mentoring process in which they guide their juniors. Students consider their level of effectiveness as leaders by reflecting on their journey through the different experiences. They reflect on whether they have acted in the spirit of the fundamental principles of the leadership skills & attributes learnt, in the context of the school culture. These reflections are captured in documents such as After-Action Reviews (AARs) and personal statements in their portfolio.
