Uniformed Groups

The four Uniformed Groups (UGs) in Hwa Chong are the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), Scouts and St John Brigade Singapore (SJBS). These students make up around a quarter of the student population.

The UGs provide the most authentic leadership development platform for students to develop their character and leadership skills as the CCAs are conducted almost entirely by the senior members. They are empowered with the role of developing training plans and activities, teaching and mentoring their juniors and also ensuring the renewal of the leadership team year after year.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

Founded in 1901, it was formed to train youths for the Singapore Volunteer Corps. Present-day NCC was established in 1969, to prepare  youths for the commencement of National Service and inculcate in them a sense of patriotism. Its current primary mission is to nurture inspiring leaders and committed citizens through fun, adventurous and military-related activities.

Cadets in NCC are exposed to a wide variety of activities related to the Singapore Armed Forces including Fieldcraft, navigation and orienteering, as well as foot drills, camps and SAR21 weapon firing.

HCINCC is also a Centre of Excellence for Precision Drill, where cadets not only master the skills for precision drill but also conduct lessons to other school units. The school has a good track record in the annual inter-unit Precision Drill Squad (PDS) Competition.

National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC)

The mission of NPCC is to develop members to be active citizens and community leaders, by working in partnership with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to fight crime and keep Singapore safe. Its history dates back to 1959 and was known as Police Cadet Corps until the current name was established in 1971.

Members in NPCC go through activities in Campcraft, survival training, various types of drills (foot, baton, arms), adventure camps and also firing of the .22 Smith and Wesson revolver.

Besides the mandatory activities mentioned above, HCINPCC also organises other personal development courses in Kayaking and First Aid, and activities such as air gun enrichment course and community service. Cadets also get to engage in community policing by joining officers from the SPF during crime prevention roadshows at public places such as shopping malls and MRT stations.

Scouts

One of the oldest youth organisation in the World, Hwa Chong Scout Group (previously The Chinese High School Scout Group) was set up in 1919, the same year when the school was founded. Under the Singapore Scout Association, the mission of Scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society

Unique to Hwa Chong, the troop also has two sub-groups within the CCA - Bugle Band and Lion Dance, both of which are conducted on Friday afternoons. Members get to join one of the two to further enrich their time in the CCA, on top of their weekly Scouting activities on Saturdays. They also support several school functions by welcoming VIPs and GOHs with their performances.

The CCA is strongly supported by alumni members who came back on weekends to guide the students, many of whom were once Chief Commissioner's Award recipients and President Scouts. The troop has, till the year 2018, produced 121 President Scouts, the highest award for Scouts in the country.

St John Brigade Singapore (SJBS)

Previously known as St John Ambulance Brigade, the youth organisation was established in 1938 in Singapore, although its official founding can be traced back to England in 1887.  The mission of the organisation is to serve mankind through training in life saving skills and health care in schools, homes, organisations and the workplace in Singapore.

Members of SJBS get to receive training in several first-aid and medical procedures, including First Aid & Life Support, Home Nursing and Transportation of Casualties, and also basic skills in foot drill. They play an active role in supporting many activities in school that are physical in nature, such as the Combined Sports Meet, Secondary One Orientation and even evacuation or fire drills in school.

Hwa Chong SJBS also provides yeomen service at public events where first aid is necessary. The unit also performs consistently well in the annual inter-corps first aid and home nursing competition, with members often chosen to represent Singapore in the biennial Singapore-Malaysia First Aid Competition.
