According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one-third of community-dwelling older adults (aged 65+) and 50–75% of nursing home residents fall annually.
In Hawai'i, on average, 128 seniors die, 2,010 are hospitalized, and 9,950 are treated in emergency departments for fall-related accidents, (Hawai'i State Senate, 2021).
Thus, being aware of methods to prevent falls and injuries related to falls is crucial for optimal patient care and safety.
If you find a resident on the floor, do not move them unless there is immediate danger; notify the nurse
Prevent falls by keeping rooms clutter free; clean spills promptly; ensure nonskid footwear and assistive devices (gait belts, walkers) are available to patients/residents
Verify glasses and hearing aids are properly working so patients/residents can safely navigate
Ensure patient/resident bed is locked, in lowest position, and call light is in reach of patient/resident; consider use of bed alarm if patient/resident are a fall risk
If patient/resident is in a chair, consider use of chair alarm
