communication.

Identify effective communication methods with residents, families, and team members.

Demonstrate active listening and respectful verbal & nonverbal communication.

Apply therapeutic communication techniques in simulated resident interactions.

Recognize and address communication barriers, including cultural, sensory, and cognitive differences.

Demonstrate proper telephone and shift-report etiquette using SBAR format.

Describe the Patient Self-Determination Act (PSDA) and advance directives.

Explain the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) and its role in protecting residents.

Identify residents’ rights and ways to promote autonomy, dignity, and privacy.

Recognize and report abuse, neglect, and exploitation per Hawaiʻi state policy.

Apply HIPAA and confidentiality principles to protect resident information.

Demonstrate ethical decision-making using realistic long-term-care scenarios.

Discuss restraint reduction and alternatives within Hawaiʻi’s care-home context.

Describe the role of different healthcare professionals.

Explain and define the steps and purpose of the nursing process.

Identify the 4 S's of delegation and how it will benefit a CNA.

Function within and uphold the ethical and legal responsibilities of the nursing assistant 

Develop job-seeking and keeping skills 

Treat all clients respectfully regardless of social, ethnic, or religious background 

Differentiate the nursing assistant role in a variety of health care settings
