Preparation experiences strengthen a learner's content knowledge and skills through coursework linked to extended interaction with the community and industry professionals. Preparation level experiences give learners supervised opportunities to apply their classroom learning and strengthen work-related skills.
They provide the opportunity for learners to:
Apply academic, technical knowledge
Apply career and employability skills in a real-world industry setting with mentorship and guidance
Preparation Experiences are appropriate for learners at the following levels:
Middle School
High School
Post-Secondary
Adult
Provide extended opportunities for learners to apply the academic, technical, and employability skills they have learned in a workplace setting
Provide opportunities for learners to earn credit or wages while they apply their academic, technical, and employability skills
Provide learners an opportunity to meaningfully contribute to a company's or organization's project and/or workflow
Prepare industry specific resource material to share with teachers and learners
Prepare all required organizational documents, forms, and agreements to share with educational institution, student, and family (if applicable)
Prepare workplace to meet safety requirements for extended student and/or teacher participation in the workplace
Coordinate application, monitoring, and evaluation processes with the educational institution
Participate in student presentation of learning (if applicable)
Provide students with mentorship and feedback on presentations or projects produced
Debrief with the educational institution and host teacher. Arrange for other ways that the organization and educational institution can work together to support student interest and learning
All students have access to Preparation level activities
Intentional effort is made for inclusion and representation in Preparation level activities
Employer expectations are aligned with educational learning outcomes
The Participation level activity prepares students for the application of employer expectations for Training level activities
Work-based learning participant interacts with and is mentored directly by career-specific professionals
Participate in post-activity survey(s) and/or reflection(s)
Typically one-time experiences at school or through a huakaʻi or field trip to build student awareness of the wide range of career, college, and community options available to them
Exploration experiences go beyond brief exposure of awareness-building experiences by extending the experience through multiple interactions or more rigorous student participation

Training experiences are extended interactions that require the application of the learned technical, employability, and academic knowledge in real-world industry settings
