Preparation experiences strengthen a learner's content knowledge and skills through coursework linked to extended interaction with the community and industry professionals. Preparation level experiences give learners supervised opportunities to apply their classroom learning and strengthen work-related skills.
They provide the opportunity for learners to:
Apply academic, technical knowledge
Apply career and employability skills in a real-world industry setting with mentorship and guidance
Preparation Level Activities are appropriate for learners at the following levels:
Middle School
High School
Post-Secondary
Adult
Provide extended opportunities for learners to apply the academic, technical, and employability skills they have learned in a workplace setting
Provide opportunities for learners to earn credit or wages while they apply their academic, technical, and employability skills
Provide learners an opportunity to meaningfully contribute to a company's or organization's project and/or workflow
Determine learning objectives for the Preparation experiences. Share these learning outcomes with industry/community partner prior to student participation.
Complete all required documents, forms, and agreements as required by the industry/community partner and educational institution. (Resource from JFF: The MOU: A Tool for Formalizing Partnerships | JFF )
Discuss any prerequisite content and/or skills students should have prior to the experience with industry/community partner
Assess site and document that workplace meets safety requirements for an in-person visit (if applicable)
Coordinate application, monitoring, and evaluation processes with industry/community partner
Participate in student presentation of learning
Assist students in utilizing feedback and mentorship opportunities on presentations or projects
Debrief with industry/community partner
Arrange for other ways that stakeholders can work together to support student interest and learning

The Participation level activity prepares students for the application of employer expectations for Training level activities
Work-based learning participant interacts with and is mentored directly by career-specific professionals (under direct teacher supervision if students are underage)
Participate in post-activity survey(s) and/or reflection(s)
Typically one-time experiences at school or through a huakaʻi or field trip to build student awareness of the wide range of career, college, and community options available to them
Exploration activities go beyond brief exposure of awareness-building experiences by extending the experience through multiple interactions or more rigorous student participation

Training experiences are extended interactions that require the application of the learned technical, employability, and academic knowledge in real-world industry settings
