Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
myself
What materials will you need for your project?
iPad, Chromebook and stop motion app
What is your plan to create in this project?
a stop motion
What unique qualities will your project have?
a stop motion telling a story about screen time
got my page set up and started to think about what to do
got the first panel done and thought about how to end the story
got the second panel done and started to try to get set up in the stop motion app
Finished the third panel and started to know the end
got the stop motion and the final panel done
Using a stop motion app, an iPad, drawings, and a computer, I created a stop motion animation to show people the importance of using screen time in healthy and balanced ways. It was meant to help others understand that screens can be useful, but they should be used responsibly.
Engaging in this process provided me with a unique opportunity for artistic growth. I actively refined my techniques, paying closer attention to proportion, perspective, and line work. Ultimately, this hands-on experience elevated my drawing skills to a much higher level.
Of the seven class standards—ranging from Digital Citizen to Innovative Designer—my work embodies the Creative Communicator. Crafting a frame-by-frame stop motion project demands an imaginative approach to visual storytelling. By designing and sequencing my drawings, I was able to express complex ideas in a unique and engaging format.
One significant challenge I faced during this project was figuring out the exact story I wanted to tell. I overcame this creative hurdle by stepping away from the camera and simply sketching the narrative out in pencil. This traditional storyboarding process allowed me to visually map out my ideas and establish a clear flow before beginning the animation.
If given the chance to do this project again, I would alter the final duration of the animation. I felt that the video was shorter than I originally intended, which constrained my storytelling. Expanding the timeline would have allowed me to develop the narrative more fully and avoid a rushed pace.
Through the CTE Program, Hastings High School offers pathways ranging from Computer Programming to Construction Trades. Although my project is digital, it closely aligns with the principles taught in the Construction Trades program. Planning a stop motion requires the same structural thinking, precise measuring, and spatial awareness needed to build a physical project.
Through this project, I explored the practical application of artistry in a real-world career context. Taking a simple pencil drawing and transforming it into a moving stop motion requires a unique blend of illustration skills and technical timing. Experiencing this workflow firsthand showed me how artists turn static ideas into engaging, moving media.
