Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
With a partner, Ryan
What materials will you need for your project?
iPad, robot
What is your plan to create in this project?
An obstacle course
What unique qualities will your project have?
The robot will move objects and go around them to follow paths looking for an exit
We coded our robot, Bob, to go in a circle
We joined a race with two other groups, Owen and Hannah.
The course was changed and we reprogrammed the robots and then raced. The video is the final project down below.
We started another race with Owen's group, this time it was a circular shape.
We changed the race course and cut it in half along with taking a video of the race.
Using robots, I created a race track and race course because the main point of the robot project was programming and accuracy. The robots needed to be programmed accurately on the race course, otherwise your robot would be disqualified and you were out of the race.
During this process, I learned one slight change or wrong move or positioning point can mess up everything in your code and cause you to make even more changes than normal. Its important to look at every outcome possible for making a slight change to ensure you don't have to make more changes.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative designer because we designed a code and made adjustments to it like putting the degree at which the robot should turn. We chose and robot and programmed it to follow a certain course and pattern like turning through a bunch of curves or making stops for sharp turns.
A challenge I overcame on this project was when we programmed the robot perfectly to the course, it would randomly drive off course when it wasn't even programmed. I was able to fix by making sure the robot started at a very specific spot each time and that if it drove off course, we would try it at least 2-3 more times and if it continued driving off, we would make minor adjustments.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the robot we used and the race course. The reason why I would change it is because we had a smaller faster robot (different type of robot compared to Owen's group), so I feel like the race wasn't very fair so if next tine we all grabbed the same robot, it would make the race more fair as they mostly travel at the same pace. I would re-due the race course so that there were a couple obstacles and maybe less turns but still some random turns.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the computer programming CTE program at Hastings High School. They take different electronics and program them to certain needs and control them to do certain things.
My project connects to careers in computer programmer because they they write and edit codes for computer software's to ensure the program runs without any errors. Computer Programmers solve any problems that arise during the coding process and make sure the final result matches the needs of there clients and viewers. Computer Programmers may also have to train others to program once they finish coding their software.
