Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
By myself
What materials will you need for your project?
A 3D printer, Tinker Cad app and a design
What is your plan to create in this project?
A small travel container to hold tic tacs for travel (I ended up switch to a bar of soap holder).
What unique qualities will your project have?
It is going to be small enough to fit inside a pocket or small purse/easy to travel with. It will also have a closing lid. The soap holder won't leave that weird residue on the counters and a puddle of water.
I answered the planning questions and came up with a list of ten ideas.
I built the frame part of the tic tac box and started thinking about how to make a latch for the lid to close.
I started to build the latch and then tried to sort and group certain pieces.
I found the area where the latch thing was gonna go and I grouped it to the box.
I added a little pole thing to support the little box above it and I grouped it to the lid.
I started working on a second project and decided I like it better so I switch to a soap holder for a bar of soap. I started with building the frame which was gonna be a duck.
I looked at some different soap holder designs and decided I didn't want to do the duck design and want to do something different.
This is the video of my 3D Printed Design
Using the tinkercad website and a 3D printer, I created a soap holder for a bar of soap because I wanted my bathroom counter to be able to have a bar of soap but the soap always leaves a residue on the counters, I also wanted the soap holder to look cool or pretty in some kind of way and the stores/online didn't have soap holders with a wavy design like I wanted so it was nice to be able to create what I wanted.
During this process, I learned there are certain qualities a project needs to have in order to be functional. For example, I wanted the soap holder to look good and I need to keep in mind I can only use white filament. My soap holder also has to have some form of grooves in order for water to drain out otherwise, water will puddle up and it could eventually cause to mold.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Computational Thinker because a Computational Thinker uses technology to solve a problem which is what I did. My problem being bars of soap are always leaving a residue on the counters after a few uses, and I used the tinkercad app online to 3D print a soap holder that won't leave a residue on the counters. The soap holder also has built in grooves so water can drain from the bar of soap and it won't puddle up and have a potential to cause mold.
A challenge I overcame on this project was space, I was working with 3 inches by 3 inches, I also kept switching my project and I didn't know how I would make the curves to let water escape and just for decoration, I also had to figure out how to make the groove connect to each other. I was able to do it by cutting and shaping cylinders in half and doing a lot of copying and pasting for the curves/grooves. To figure out a project idea, I started with the tic tac box, didn't like the design so then a soap holder was what I wanted to do and the I was told the soap holder need holes to let water escape so I searched up some soap holder inspo and liked a wavy design so I thought about how I could make it happen and I did. I didn't expect the 3x3 inches to actually be big enough to hold a bar of soap but it actually was because I went home and immediately tried to see if it holds one and it perfectly does.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the height and if you look closely at the design, there are small points like corners on the top where the curves are. The reason why I would change it is because I was kind of rushed but I had enough time to fix the points/get rid of them but I chose to be lazy and not. The height might've been able to be just a little big taller than it was and if I was able to, I would increase the length and width just a tiny bit.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. This means that they will use a Computer Aided Software to design parts then make little adjustments before 3D Printing it. They may also design their idea on a computer but then make it using tools and power equipment to create it.
My project connects to careers in marine engineer because a marine engineer has to design and construct ships, boats, submarines, etc. They will design them, create them, then test them and depending on what happens during and after the test, the ship may need repairing or will need to be completely re-designed. Some marine engineers spend their time fixing vessels and equipment, sometimes they may be at sea and needing to fix it and other times, they may be on land.
