Reflection
I used cardboard, hot glue, duct tape, and an iPad to create a race car. My classmate and I both found racing cars interesting, so we decided to build one ourselves. We carefully planned out the design and gathered all the materials we needed. By working together, we were able to bring our idea to life and had a lot of fun doing it.
During this project, I learned a lot about working with cardboard. I figured out different ways to cut, shape, and glue the cardboard to make it more sturdy and useful. This experience helped me become better at using cardboard as a material for building things. Now, I feel more confident in my ability to create projects with cardboard in the future.
The seven standards of our class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project connects to the "Innovative Designer" standard because I came up with the idea for the race car and then created it. I had to think creatively about how to use the materials in new ways to build something functional. This allowed me to practice innovation and problem-solving as I turned my idea into reality.
One challenge I faced during this project was that the wheels I made didn’t work as expected. At first, they wouldn’t roll smoothly, which made the race car difficult to move. To fix this, I decided to remake the wheels and asked for help from my classmate. With their advice and some adjustments, I was able to get the wheels working properly, and the car functioned much better.
If I had the chance to do this project again, I would change the way I made the wheels. The main reason for this is that the wheels didn’t roll properly the first time. I would try different materials or designs to make sure they move smoothly. Changing the wheels would make the race car work much better and be more fun to use.
Hastings High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program offers many different areas to explore, like Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects specifically to the Engineering Design program because it involved creating and building a race car. Through this project, I used skills like planning, designing, and problem-solving, which are important in engineering. This experience gave me a better understanding of what working in Engineering Design might be like.
My project connects to careers in design engineering because design engineers create and build things, just like I did with my race car. They take ideas and turn them into real, working products by designing and testing them. During my project, I followed a similar process by coming up with a design and then making it using different materials. This gave me a better understanding of what design engineers do in their jobs.
