I used a Makey Makey, Play-Doh, a computer, alligator clips, and an iPad to create a keypad for my computer. I was excited to try this project because it let me see how simple materials could be turned into something cool and interactive. The Play-Doh acted as buttons, and the alligator clips helped connect everything, allowing me to control the computer. It was a fun way to learn how technology can be used in creative ways.
I learned how to use a Makey Makey. I also learned how to connect alligator clips to it. The Makey Makey lets you turn everyday objects into a keyboard. I spent some time exploring the Makey Makey website. It was fun to see how everything worked and interacted together.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project connects to Empowered Learner because I was able to design the keypad the way I wanted it to look. I took control of the design process and made decisions about how everything should be arranged. This helped me learn more about how to use the tools and make it work for my needs. By doing this, I felt more confident in my ability to create and learn.
One of the challenges I encountered on this project was getting the keypad to work properly. Despite my efforts, it wouldn't register any input at first, and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't responding. After some trial and error, I discovered that the issue was with the connection. I decided to push the alligator clips in farther, ensuring a better connection between the wires and the keypad. Once I did that, the keypad worked perfectly, and I was able to move forward with the project.
If given the chance to do this project again, I would change the way I created the keypads. Initially, I had envisioned making arrow-shaped buttons instead of the simple square ones. However, due to time constraints, I wasn't able to execute that design. If I had more time, I would focus on creating the arrow-shaped keypads to enhance both the functionality and the aesthetic of the project.
The Hastings High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program offers a wide range of courses, including Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project is closely connected to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. This program focuses on the development of technical skills and the application of design principles, which directly aligns with the hands-on approach I used in my project. By combining creativity and engineering, my work reflects the core values and objectives of the Engineering Design program.
My project connects to careers in mechanical engineering because I designed and created a functional keyboard. Mechanical engineering involves problem-solving and the design of systems and products, which directly aligns with the process I followed to build the keypad. By considering factors like structure, functionality, and user interaction, I applied principles commonly used in mechanical engineering. This experience has given me a deeper understanding of how engineering design is crucial in creating innovative products.
