Smart Goal:
Within the next three years, we will improve the library collection and increase student engagement in reading by 5% as measured by circulation data and student surveys. This will be achieved through:
Update collections based on diversity, Social Emotional Learning and literacy goals, student and staff requests and recommendations and from leading book reviewers such as School Library Journal, Booklist, Follett, Mackin, Common Sense Media, Kirkus and The Horn Book.
Genrefying the library collection by categorizing books into clearly labeled sections according to genre, facilitating easier browsing and discovery for students. This process will be completed by the end of year three. Genrefying is putting books in to genre's to make it easier for students to find books.
Ensuring age appropriateness by reviewing our collection to assure the books align with recommended age ranges by using professional reviews. At least 30% of the library collection will be tagged appropriately by the end of the year one.
Conducting a comprehensive review of the current collection to identify outdated or irrelevant materials, resulting in the removal of the existing inventory through strategic wedding. Weeding will be done on a monthly basis.
Diversifying the collection by adding new titles every year representing a range of cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives, ensuring inclusivity and relevance to our community and the diverse world we live in. We will continually look for books to support this goal, by maintaining our current percentage.
In alignment with state early literacy instruction elementary schools will have read aloud minutes during library time.
Progress will be monitored monthly through circulation reports and age appropriateness tagging completion rates. Annual student feedback surveys on reading habits and preferences. Adjustments will be made as necessary to meet the target and ensure the ongoing development of a vibrant reading culture in the school library.
