Introducing the MDM system
The 1:1 iPad programme has been in effect for almost a decade at Harrow Bangkok but since 2023, we decided to improve and streamline the implementation of the 1:1 programme in order to ensure simplicity, efficiency and the highest possible standards of e-Safety for all stakeholders.
After much consideration, and research across a range of leading schools in Asia, we decided to adopt the practice of adding the students' devices to the school's MDM system.
What is the MDM system?
At Harrow, we use Apple School Manager's MDM (mobile device management) system, to manage staff and student iPads. This important software allows us to buy content in volume, update software regularly, push out new apps remotely and much more.
How does the MDM system benefit parents and students?
Parents do not need to add the school required apps themselves - ICT services will do this via the MDM system.
Parents do not need to update apps - ICT services will update all educational apps regularly via the MDM system.
Students will have all the apps they need to access the curriculum - no more issues where some students have a different app version to others or are missing a required app altogether (thus impacting learning).
Because we use Apple School Manager to purchase apps in bulk, the student will benefit from receiving a range of paid apps for free. Should your child move to a different school, these apps will be removed.
You can still use still purchase age appropriate apps independently via your personal Apple ID, ideally using the 'Family Sharing' method.
Are there any risks to privacy when an iPad is added to the school's MDM system?
ICT services will not be able to 'see' into the iPad. They can only add, update and remove apps via the MDM system.
It is possible for ICT services to view your location but this is easily changed by turning off this option in settings. We can show you how to do this at the SPVi service centre.
Should your child move schools, the MDM software will be removed from the iPad and ICT services will no longer be able to install and update apps. Any apps purchased by the school will be removed at this time.
